Buddha Figurines and Their Meanings

For many years Buddha ornaments have been a popular part of Straits Trading’s collections. There is deep spiritual and religious meaning behind their display, as well as, making a beautiful decoration for the home.

The term Buddha means enlightened one, a knower. Buddhists believe that a Buddha is born in each aeon of time. Our Buddha—the sage Gotama who attained enlightenment under the bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya in India—was the seventh in the succession.

Buddha statues have various hand gestures and when possible, we include the names of these in the product description on our website.

The hand gestures are known as mudras and choosing an ornament with a specific mudra can be used in the feng shui of the home. Here is a brief introduction which could help when speaking to your customers about these lovely ornaments.

 

Dhyana

Is a meditation mudra, hands placed together right on top of left, palms facing upwards, and thumbs slightly touching. This gesture is connected to concentration. Perfect for those who practice yoga.

Bhumisparsha

The earth touching mudra. This represents grounding. The left hand remains in the dhyana mudra while the right is pointing downwards with fingertips touching the earth. Often placed in the centre of the home to provide support.

Vitarka

Teaching or discussion mudra is perfectly placed in a study or knowledge area of the home. The thumb and index fingers touch, creating a circle that symbolises an uninterrupted flow of wisdom. The other three fingers point upwards, palm facing outwards.

Abhaya

The mudra most often seen in our collection of buddhas, is a symbol of fearlessness and protection. The left hand is in dhyana mudra while the right points upwards with palm facing out. This mudra may strengthen your boundaries while still opening your heart.
